Forms: 1800s mirro mirro, 1800s– miromiro, 1800s– miro-miro.
Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori miromiro.
Etymology: < Maori miromiro tomtit, reduplicated form of miro : see miro n.2
The New Zealand tomtit, Petroica macrocephala (family Eopsaltridae), esp. a black and white subspecies, P. macrocephala toitoi, of the North Island. Also (occasionally) (perhaps by confusion): the New Zealand robin, P. australis (cf. miro n.2).
