Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps (with unexplained alteration) < classical Latin miniātus (see miniate adj.), with reference to the red of the male (the type species of the genus Pericrocotus is Muscicapa miniata).

Any of various brightly coloured cuckoo-shrikes of the genus Pericrocotus (family Campephagidae) of tropical Asia, the male of which is typically red and black, and the female yellow and grey.
