Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin capitellum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin capitellum capital of a column (Vulgate), top of a tool (4th cent.), division or section of a psalm (6th cent.), kind of lye (13th cent. in British and continental sources), (in botany) small knob at the end of e.g. a stigma (late 18th cent. or earlier), (in anatomy) capitulum (1805 or earlier), either < classical Latin caput head (see caput n.) + -ellum -ellum suffix, or < classical Latin capitulum (see capitulum n.) with suffix substitution.With sense 1 compare earlier capital n.1 2. With sense 2 compare earlier capitulum n. 1. The semantic motivation of the sense ‘lye’ in post-classical Latin is unknown.
1. A strong preparation of lye, used as an ingredient of soap and of medicinal cauterizing agents. Obsolete.
