Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably < a variant of capped adj. + Middle French berne wide cloak worn by women (although this is first attested later: 1532 as bergne; < Spanish bernia (15th cent.), itself of uncertain and disputed origin).
Scottish. Obsolete.
Apparently: a cape or hood.
