Compare chapter n.In Old English usually a strong masculine (capitol , capitul ); a weak masculine by-form (capitula ) is also occasionally attested. In β. forms probably influenced by post-classical Latin capitellum , Anglo-Norman and Middle French capitel (see capital n.1).
