Etymology: Probably a variant of Scots (Shetland) mootie, in the same sense (19th cent.; < moot tiny creature or thing (19th cent.; see note) + -y suffix6); compare earlier alamootie n.Shetland Scots moot is probably < the unattested Norn cognate of Norwegian regional mutt small piece of straw, mote, a very small thing, transferred use of mutt mite, variant of mott moth n.1

Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mitty.
Etymology: < the name of Walter Mitty, fantasizing hero of James Thurber's short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1939 in New Yorker 18 Mar.) and the 1947 film adaptation of the same name.
A person likened to Walter Mitty in indulging in or acting out daydreams, esp. involving a more exciting or glamorous life than he or she actually leads; the characteristics of such a person. Frequently attributive.
