Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans Koevoet.
Etymology: < Afrikaans Koevoet, specific use of koevoet crowbar < Dutch koevoet (1588 in this sense; already in Middle Dutch denoting the foot of a cow) < koe cow n.1 + voet foot n.Compare the following earlier, apparently isolated example of a borrowing of the Afrikaans word in the sense ‘crowbar’:1980 in Dict. S. Afr. Eng. on Hist. Princ. (1996) (at cited word) [Informant, Grahamstown] I have just demolished a built in cupboard to retrieve some photographs that had slipped down behind... Amazing what one can do with a hammer and koevoet.

1. A paramilitary counter-insurgency unit of the South African police force, deployed in South West Africa (now Namibia) from 1979 until 1989.The unit was withdrawn from Namibia prior to the country's independence in 1990.
