Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: micro- comb. form, Greek σθένος.
Etymology: < micro- comb. form + ancient Greek σθένος strength (see asthenia n.). Compare megasthene n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (məi·krŏīn) /ˈmaɪkrəsθiːn/.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.
J. D. Dana's name for: a placental mammal belonging to a division comprising those that are relatively small and not physically powerful (including bats, insectivores, rodents, and edentates). Cf. megasthene n.
