Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mesnomer.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman mesnomer (14th cent.), use as noun of Anglo-Norman and Old French mesnomer, mesnommer to name incorrectly, to give an abusive name to (early 14th cent.; also in early 15th cent. in sense ‘to declare a false name’) < mes- mis- prefix2 + nommer to name < classical Latin nōmināre (see nominate v.).
1. Law. A mistake in naming a person or place; an inaccurate description of this nature.
