Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin christianismus the Christian religion (3rd cent.), Christendom (from 12th cent. in British sources) < Hellenistic Greek χριστιανισμός Christianity < χριστιανός Christian adj. + -ισμός -ism suffix. In sense 3 independently < Christian adj. + -ism suffix.Compare Middle French, French christianisme the Christian religion (1580 or earlier), and also Old Occitan crestianesme, crestianesmes the Christian religion, Christendom, Catalan †crestianisme the Christian religion (all 13th cent.), Spanish cristianismo the Christian religion (c1200), Christendom (a1207), Italian cristianesimo the Christian religion, Christendom (both 13th cent.), Portuguese cristianismo the Christian religion, Christendom (14th cent.).
