Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: Christian , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < the name of Christian Frederik (1786–1848), Crown Prince of Denmark and later King (from 1839, as Christian VIII) + -ite suffix1. In sense 1 after Italian cristianite ( T. Monticelli & N. Covelli Prodromo della mineralogia vesuviana (1825) 428), in honour of Prince Christian Frederik who explored Vesuvius together with the authors. In sense 2 after French christianite (A. Descloizeaux 1847, in Compt. rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 25 710).
Mineralogy. Now historical and rare.
1. A mineral of the feldspar group later identified as anorthite.

1848 London, Edinb., & Dublin Philos. Mag. 32 156 The Iceland and Marburg minerals form therefore a distinct species, inasmuch as they possess a peculiar form and composition; M. Descloizeaux proposes the name of Christianite for this mineral.
1906 F. Oswald Treat. Geol. Armenia i. ii. 18 A second zeolite (christianite) is also present.
1985 G. Gottardi & E. Galli Nat. Zeolites iii. 134 Des Cloizeaux (1847) proposed the name christianite for minerals which later on were shown to be phillipsite.
