Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mignardise.
Etymology: < Middle French, French mignardise (1539 in sense ‘delicate kindness’, 1567 in sense ‘affectation’, 1868 in sense 2; apparently not recorded in dictionaries before 1959 in sense 3) < mignard (see miniard adj. and n.) + -ise (compare -ise suffix2).
1. Tenderness, gentleness; affected delicacy of behaviour or appearance; affectation. Also: an instance of this. Now rare.
