Etymology: < French Minitel (1980, originally denoting the terminal giving access to the videotex system), probably < -min- (in terminal terminal n.) + -i- -i- connective + tel- (in téléphone telephone n.), although probably influenced also by mini- mini- comb. form. Compare télétel denoting the videotex system to which the minitel terminal gives access.

An interactive videotex system sponsored by the French government, in which computer terminals are linked together via the telephone network. Also: a home computer terminal forming part of this system. Frequently attributive.
