Inflections: Plural microbacteria.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: micro- comb. form, bacterium n.
Etymology: < micro- comb. form + bacterium n., after German Mikrobakterie (F. Cohn 1872, in Beiträge zur Biol. der Pflanzen). In sense 2, after scientific Latin Microbacterium, genus name (S. Orla-Jensen Lactic Acid Bacilli (1919) 179).

1. Any small, esp. rod-shaped, bacterium. Now rare.
