Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Polyadelphia n., -ous suffix; Latin Polyadelphia , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < polyadelph- (in Polyadelphia n. or its etymon scientific Latin Polyadelphia) + -ous suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek πολυάδελϕος having many brothers. Compare later monadelphous adj., diadelphous adj., adelphous adj.
Botany.
Of stamens: partially united by their filaments into three or more groups. Formerly also: †(in the Linnaean artificial system) characteristic of or belonging to the class Polyadelphia (obsolete).
