Etymology: In quot. ?c1425 at sense 1 < post-classical Latin methatarsum (1363 in Chauliac) < metha- , variant of meta- meta- prefix + tarsum (see tarsus n.); in later use probably independently < post-classical Latin metatarsus (1589), remodelled form of methatarsum . Compare metatarse n.
1. Anatomy and Zoology. The group of bones (five in humans, often fewer in quadrupeds) lying between the tarsus (ankle) and the phalanges (toes); the part of the foot or leg containing these bones. In a bird: the bone which corresponds to tarsus and metatarsus together (the tarsometatarsus).
