Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Greek πίθηκος , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πίθηκος ape (see pithecoid adj. and n.) + -ian suffix; in use as adjective after scientific Latin Pithecia, genus name (see pitheciine adj. and n.). With the noun compare French pithécien (1869 or earlier). N.E.D.(1907) gives the pronunciation as (piþī·siăn) /pɪˈθiːsɪən/.
