Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pitheciinae.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pitheciinae, subfamily name ( St. G. Mivart in Proc. Zool. Soc. (1865) 547) < Pithecia , genus name (A. G. Desmarest 1804, Tabl. méth. historical nat. in Nouveau dict. d'hist. nat. XXIV. 8/1) + -inae -inae suffix; compare -ine suffix¹. Compare pithecine adj.Scientific Latin Pithecia is ultimately < ancient Greek πίθηκος ape, monkey (see pithecoid adj. and n.), but it is not clear if it is modelled on Hellenistic Greek πιθήκεια , feminine of πιθήκειος apelike ( < ancient Greek πίθηκος + -ειος , suffix forming adjectives), or on classical Latin pithēcium little monkey ( < Hellenistic Greek πιθήκιον ( < ancient Greek πίθηκος + -ιον , diminutive suffix; compare -y suffix⁴), although this is only recorded denoting an item of ship's tackle).
