Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μετάχρονος anachronistic ( < ancient Greek μετα- meta- prefix + χρόνος : see chronic adj.) + -ism suffix; in sense 1 perhaps after anachronism n.; in sense 2 after German Metachronie (see metachrony n.). Compare post-classical Latin metachronismus (a1715), French métachronisme (1762), and German Metachronismus . With sense 2 compare slightly earlier metachronous adj. 1.
