Etymology: < (i) Middle French ethnarque (1558 (in a translation of Josephus) or earlier; French éthnarque ), and its etymons (ii) post-classical Latin ethnarcha (1513 or earlier) and (iii) Hellenistic Greek ἐθνάρχης ruler of a tribe or nation, title of a Jewish official < ancient Greek ἔθνος nation (see ethnic adj.) + -αρχος -arch comb. form1.
A ruler, a governor, a national leader; spec. (a) Ancient History a governor of a Jewish kingdom or province under the Roman Empire; (b) a head of an Eastern Orthodox church with political as well as spiritual leadership.
