Origin: A borrowing from Danish. Etymon: Danish metamikt.
Etymology: < Danish metamikt (W. C. Brøgger 1893, in Salmonsens Konversationsleksikon 1 743/2) < ancient Greek μετα- meta- prefix + μικτός mixed, blended (see mictic adj.).The verb μεταμιγνυμι cited by Brøgger is not attested in ancient Greek. Compare ancient Greek μεταμίσγειν to mix among.
Mineralogy.
Of a mineral: converted into an amorphous state, with loss of internal crystal structure, as a result of natural radioactive decay of its constituent atoms. Also: designating this state.
