单词 mediamnes
释义

mediamnesn.

Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mediamnes.
Etymology: Probably < post-classical Latin mediamnes, plural of mediamnis island or sandbank in the middle of a river (from late 12th cent., chiefly in British sources) < classical Latin medius middle (see medium adj.) + amnis river (see amnic adj.1), perhaps after, or alteration of, post-classical Latin mediamna (5th–6th cent. in Priscian; from late 12th cent. chiefly in British sources), a calque on ancient Greek Μεσοποταμία Mesopotamia n.Post-classical Latin mediamna might also be the source of the English word, but does not so well account for its termination in -es.
Obsolete. rare.
With plural agreement. Islands in the middle of a river.
