Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Melanophlogit.

Etymology: < German Melanophlogit (A. von Lasaulx 1876, in Neues Jahrb. f. Mineral. 175) < melano- melano- comb. form + ancient Greek ϕλογ- , ϕλόξ flame (see phlogiston n.) + -it -ite suffix¹, after the black colour of the mineral when heated. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (melănǫ·flŏdʒəit) /mɛləˈnɒflədʒaɪt/.

Mineralogy.

A form of silica with a clathrate structure containing organic impurities, which crystallizes in the tetragonal system and occurs as minute cubic crystals or thin crusts on sulphur.Formerly thought to be a polymorph of quartz.
