Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ballistica.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ballistica (1644 in De ballistica et acontismologia in the source cited at ballistic adj.), use as noun of feminine of ballisticus ballistic adj.: see -ic suffix 2. Compare French balistique (1647; < post-classical Latin). Compare later ballistic adj.With exterior ballistics n., interior ballistics n. at sense 1b compare French balistique extérieure (1872 or earlier), balistique intérieure (1874 or earlier), German äussere Ballistik (1893 or earlier), innere Ballistik (1870 or earlier) respectively.
