单词 masula
释义

masulan.

Brit. /məˈsuːlə/, U.S. /məˈsulə/
Forms: 1600s musoola, 1600s mussoolae, 1600s mussulae, 1600s 1800s mussoola, 1700s mausolo, 1700s–1800s masoola, 1700s–1800s massoola, 1700s–1800s massoolah, 1800s masuli, 1800s mussoolah, 1800s mussuli, 1800s– massulah, 1800s– masulah, 1900s– masula.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < Marathi māsḷī or Konkani māsḷī fish, via Telugu and Tamil pronunciation. The -la form may represent an inferred singular based on such Europeanized forms as Portuguese maçules (plural, c1580) and Italian masudi (plural, 1582 in C. Federici Raccolta Viaggi (whence the English form Masady in the translation (1588) by T. Hiscock); probably an error for *masuli). This etymology would explain the absence of any such word for a vessel from dictionaries of Tamil. Other etymologies suggested in H. Yule and A. C. Burnell, Hobson-Jobson (1886) at mussoola are not serious possibilities. Relationship with mashwa n. is unlikely.
A large surf-boat used on the Coromandel Coast of south-east India, esp. for conveying passengers and goods between ships and the shore. Also masula boat.
