Forms: late Middle English–1500s pastaunce, 1500s pastauns, 1500s 1800s– pastance; Scottish pre-1700 pastence, pre-1700 pastens, pre-1700 1900s– pastance.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French passetemps.
Etymology: Probably < Middle French passetemps passe-temps n. (compare the variant passetans (1585)), with alteration after nouns ending in -ance suffix: see note below. Compare earlier pastime n.The alteration may be for the purpose of rhyme; compare e.g. quots. a1500, c1525, and a1529. With the Older Scots forms pastence , pastens perhaps compare also tence , tens , variants of tense n.
