Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans meid.
Etymology: < Afrikaans meid < Dutch meid servant girl (now archaic), maiden, girl (Middle Dutch meit , a northern variant of māghet maid n.1; compare Middle Low German meyt, Middle High German meit (German (archaic) Maid)).
South African. offensive.
Among Afrikaans-speakers: an insulting form of address or reference to a (young) black woman. Cf. meidjie n., meisie n.
