Etymology: < the name of Mary Stuart (1542–87), Queen of Scotland, probably after French à la Marie Stuart (1825 with reference to a cap; 1830 with reference to a bodice: see also quot. 1852).Compare:1852 E. Ruskin Let. 26 Jan. in Effie in Venice (1965) ii. 254 A coiffure I have made for myself... It is a piece of scarlet velvet with a fringe of large and small pearls all round; a point à la Marie Stuart comes in front.
attributive. Designating a style of clothes, hair, etc., similar to that worn by or popularly associated with Mary Stuart (Mary, Queen of Scots, 1542–87); spec. denoting a cap with a central dip or peak over the forehead.
