Etymology: < man n.1 + of prep. + the adj. + world n. Compare Old French, Middle French, French homme du monde (13th cent.).The Vulgate version of Psalm 17:14 (Vulgate 16:14) (see quot. 1535 at main sense) has a paucis de terra (Gallican Psalter); compare the translation in the later version of the Wycliffite Bible: ‘fro a fewe men of the lond’.
Originally: †a secular or lay person, as opposed to an ecclesiastic or cleric (cf. man of the church n. at man n.1 Phrases 2z) (obsolete). Later: a worldly or unspiritual person, a person who has a broad experience of society and a pragmatic understanding of its flaws and vices.
