Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μάσταξ.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μάσταξ mouth, jaws < the base of μασᾶσθαι to chew (see masseter n.).
Zoology.
The muscular pharynx of a rotifer, containing the masticatory jaws.

1855 P. H. Gosse in Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 146 425 I propose then to appropriate to the sub-globose muscular bulb, which contains the manducatory organs in most Rotifera, the term mastax.
1877 T. H. Huxley Man. Anat. Invertebrated Animals iv. 187 At the bottom is a muscular pharynx, or mastax.
1959 J. Clegg Freshwater Life Brit. Isles (ed. 2) ix. 133 The microscopic food..[is] swept into the mastax, and there ground by the jaws into a pulp before passing on to the stomach.
