Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps related to Old Icelandic drekkja to submerge, to drown, Norwegian regional drekkja to soak, to drown (see drench v.), although the phonology is difficult to explain. The relationship between the form types is unclear. Compare later drook v.
