Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin mamzer (Vulgate, at Deuteronomy 23:2, where it is glossed hoc est, de scorto natus ‘that is, the son of a whore’) < Hebrew mamzēr a person born of an illicit union, such as that between Jew and pagan or between unmarried Jews (in later use probably sometimes independently < Hebrew). Reborrowed in 20th cent. < Hebrew mamzēr, frequently via Yiddish mamzer bastard, clever person, sponger, thief.
A person conceived in a forbidden sexual union, esp. as defined by rabbinical tradition. Also in extended uses as a term of abuse or familiarity.
