Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin praetereā.
Etymology: < classical Latin praetereā (adverb) in addition to that, besides < praeter beyond (see preter- prefix) + , ablative of ea , feminine corresponding to is , id he, it (see id n.3). The English use as noun perhaps arose originally from use as a heading of items in an account; with the plural use compare etceteras n. at et cetera n. 2. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (prite·riă) /priːˈtɛriːə/.
