Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin praetergress-, praetergredī.
Etymology: < classical Latin praetergress-, past participial stem of praetergredī to go past, in post-classical Latin also to overlook, transgress (Vulgate) < praeter- preter- prefix + gradī to step, go (see gradient adj.). Compare later pretergression n. N.E.D. (1908) indicates the stress as preterˈgress.
Obsolete. rare.
