单词 malurine
释义

malurineadj.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Malurinae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Malurinae < Malurus , genus name ( L. J. P. Vieillot Analyse d'une nouvelle ornithol. élém. (1816) 70; explained by Viellot as < Greek μαλὸς (see below) + ancient Greek οὐρά tail: see uro- comb. form2) + -inae -inae suffix.Ancient Greek μάλος occurs in a single attestation in Theocritus as the epithet of a goat, probably in sense ‘white’, but Vieillot Analyse d'une nouvelle ornithol. élém. 70 glosses μαλὸς as Latin tener , ‘soft’ or ‘tender’, although the birds have distinctly stiff tails. Vieillot's interpretation of μάλος would presumably relate it to ancient Greek μαλακός soft (for which see malacia n.); however, compare Hesychius' gloss of the Byzantine Greek compound μάλουρος as λεύκουρος white-tailed (attested also in Hellenistic Greek in Callimachus as feminine noun μάλουρις probably denoting a cat). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·liurəin) /ˈmæljʊraɪn/.
Ornithology. Obsolete. rare.
Of or belonging to the former subfamily Malurinae of Australasian wren-like birds with a long cocked tail, now split into three groups of family status ( Maluridae, Acanthizidae, and Ephthianuridae).
