Of, relating to, or designating the stables of Augeas, legendary king of Elis, notorious for their filthy condition, the cleansing of which was one of the twelve labours of Hercules (see labour of Hercules n. at labour n. Phrases 3). Used allusively to denote any extremely dirty place, or (figurative) a place or institution characterized by great moral corruption or depravity.
