Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: auto- comb. form1, motive adj.
Etymology: < auto- comb. form1 + motive adj. With sense A. 1 compare French automotif self-propelled (1853, in système automotif , denoting a mechanized carriage used in mining, or earlier). Compare later automobile adj., automobile n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1972) claims that the use as noun represents a borrowing < a French feminine noun automotive ; however, such a noun appears to be unattested, although quots. 18651, 18652 at sense B. suggest a French origin. Compare French automotion fact of being self-propelled (1864 or earlier).
