Etymology: < classical Latin fūnis rope, in post-classical Latin also vein or network of veins in the arm (11th cent. or earlier), umbilical cord (1699 or earlier) of uncertain origin; perhaps < an ablaut variant (o -grade) of the same base as classical Latin fīlum thread (see file n.2).In plural form funes after the Latin plural form.
Anatomy.
1. A vein of the arm used in phlebotomy; (perhaps) one of the larger veins accompanying the brachial artery. Obsolete.
