单词 magment
释义

magmentn.

Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin magmentum.
Etymology: Probably < a misunderstanding (found already in ancient grammarians) of classical Latin magmentum some part (perhaps the entrails) of a sacrificial animal (related to mactus honoured, magnus : see macte int., magni- comb. form), which was analysed as showing magis ‘to a greater extent’ and augmentum increase (see augment n.). Compare post-classical Latin magmentare for augmentare (one isolated 15th-cent. occurrence). N.E.D. (1904) indicates the stress as ˈmagment.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Great increase.
