Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek -τροπος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek -τροπος turning, combining form (in e.g. μονότροπος : see Monotropa n.) of τρόπος turn (see trope n.). Compare French -trope (formations in which are found from the beginning of the 19th cent. or earlier in sense 1, and from the late 19th cent. or earlier in sense 2).Attested earliest at the beginning of the 19th cent. in the French loan hemitrope adj. Formations within English are found from the first half of the 19th cent.; early examples include thaumatrope n., rheotrope n. at rheo- comb. form , kalotrope n., and (in sense 1) allotrope n. Combining with first elements ultimately of Greek origin.
