Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek τροπή , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek τροπή act of turning (see trope n.) + -ic suffix. Compare French -tropique (formations in which are found from the first half of the 19th cent.), German -tropisch (formations in which are found from the second half of the 19th cent.), and Swedish -tropisk (formations in which are found from the first half of the 19th cent., e.g. allotropisk allotropic adj.). Compare tropic adj.1Attested earliest in the first half of the 19th cent. in allotropic adj., an adaptation from either French or German. Formations within English are found from the second half of the 19th cent.; early examples are anisotropic adj., isotropic adj., aeolotropic adj. Chiefly combining with first elements ultimately of Greek origin; for exceptions, compare e.g. galvanotropic adj. at galvanotropism n. Derivatives, viscerotropic adj. at viscero- comb. form 2.
