Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin -tropia; Greek -τροπία.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin and scientific Latin -tropia (formations in which are found from at least the early 17th cent.), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek -τροπία, combining form (in e.g. ἐντροπία : see entropy n.) < -τροπος (see -trope comb. form) + -ία -y suffix3. Compare French -tropie (formations in which are found from the first half of the 19th cent.), German -tropie (formations in which are found from the first half of the 19th cent., e.g. Allotropie allotropy n.). Compare -tropism comb. form.Formations are found from the mid 19th cent., in early use frequently as adaptations of words from foreign languages (compare e.g. allotropy n., anatropy n.). Combining with first elements ultimately of Greek origin.
