Etymology: < ancient Greek μαλακο-, combining form of μαλακός soft ( < an extended form of the Indo-European base of meal n.1), occurring in compounds such as μαλακόδερμος malacoderm adj. and n., and used also in a few scientific Latin words such as Malacostraca (see malacostracan n. and adj.); in certain compounds, of which the most important is malacology n., it represents ancient Greek μαλάκια molluscs.
