Etymology: < low adj. + veld n., after Afrikaans Laeveld, literally ‘low country’ (1949 or earlier as a place name, 1854 or earlier in South African Dutch as laagveld denoting this region). Compare highveld n., bushveld n.
Originally and chiefly South African.
A subtropical region of north-eastern South Africa and some adjoining territories, lying mostly at an altitude of under 600 metres; esp. the provinces of Mpumalanga and Limpopo (formerly in the Transvaal), and south-eastern Zimbabwe. Cf. highveld n.
