Etymology: < auto- comb. form1 + hypnosis n., perhaps after French autohypnose or its model German Autohypnose (both 1888 or earlier). Compare auto-hypnotization n. and slightly earlier auto-hypnotism n.
The action, process, or technique of hypnotizing oneself; the state or condition of self-induced hypnosis. Also: an instance of this. Cf. self-hypnosis n.
