Origin: Perhaps a borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse hlǫup.
Etymology: Perhaps a derivative (with suffix -er suffix3) of Old Norse hlǫup (hlaup ) coagulation (of milk or blood). Compare Old Norse hløypa transitive to curdle, Swedish löpe , Danish løbe , Norwegian dialect löper , löyper rennet. Compare lop v.4
Now only Scottish and northern dialect.
