Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin aularis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin aularis of a university hall of residence (from 1412 in British sources) < classical Latin aula hall (see aula n.) + -āris -ary suffix2. Compare slightly earlier Aularian n. and later Aularian adj.Compare post-classical Latin aularius of a hall or palace (in an undated glossary). N.E.D. (1885) gives the pronunciation as (ǭ·lări) /ˈɔːlərɪ/.
Obsolete. rare.
At Oxford University: of or relating to a hall, as distinct from a college (see hall n.1 4). Cf. Aularian adj.
