单词 red cock
释义

red cockn.

Brit. /ˈrɛd ˌkɒk/, U.S. /ˈrɛd ˌkɑk/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: red adj., cock n.1
Etymology: < red adj. + cock n.1Attested earlier as a tavern name (in sense 1):1338 in H. E. Salter Mediaeval Arch. Univ. Oxf. (1921) II. 213 Agn' atte Redcokke.1423 in R. W. Chambers & M. Daunt Bk. London Eng. (1931) 149 John Mabile, atte Rede Cok yn the pultrie. With sense 3 compare Dutch de roode haan (Middle Dutch de roode hane ), Middle Low German de rōde hāne , German der rote Hahn (frequently from the 16th cent. in various idioms, e.g. jemandem den roten Hahn aufs Dach setzen , lit. ‘to put the red cock on a person's roof’), all in the same sense. The sense apparently represents a transferred use (probably on account of the fiery red colour of the animal), but the precise semantic motivation is uncertain and disputed; for a discussion of some suggestions, see L. Röhrich Lexikon der sprichwörtlichen Redensarten I. (2003) at Hahn. In later use in this sense (compare quots. 1883, 1999 at sense 3) partly after Russian krasnyj petux, in same sense (apparently early 19th cent. or earlier as †krasnyj pětux″); the idiom is found also in other Slavonic languages. It is uncertain whether all of the uses are ultimately connected.
