Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: red adj., proper name China.
Etymology: < red adj. (compare red adj. 18) + the name of China (see China n.1). Compare Chinese hóngsè zhōnghuá , the title of a periodical (and news service) which served as the organ of the Chinese Soviet Provisional Central Government and was instituted at Mao Zedong's initiative (1931; < hóngsè red, revolutionary + zhōnghuá China; compare quot. 1934). Compare slightly earlier Red Chinese adj.
