Etymology: Old English liðig = Old Norse liðug-r yielding, nimble, free, unimpeded, Middle Dutch ledech unimpeded, unoccupied (Dutch ledig, leeg empty, vacant, unoccupied), Middle High German ledic free, unimpeded (modern German ledig unoccupied, vacant). The ulterior etymology is obscure; see Kluge s.v. ledig.
